What to do in a Dental Emergency

A Toothache:

Brush and floss around the area causing pain. Many times food is stuck and is the culprit of your child’s discomfort. You can also try to rinse with some warm water. If this does not help, or the area seems swollen or warm, call our office for an appointment.

Fractured Tooth:

Rinse your child’s mouth with lukewarm water and apply a cold compress to reduce any swelling. If half or more of your child’s tooth is fractured or broken, please call us right away.

Cuts on gums, lips, or tongue

Apply pressure with a clean cloth or sterile gauze to stop bleeding (these cutes can bleed a lot!). After the bleeding has stopped, you can place a cold compress to reduce swelling. If there is any trouble stopping the bleeding, call your child’s pediatrician, or go to your local emergency room for treatment.

If a Baby tooth gets "knocked out":

Please call our office here for an appointment.

If an Adult tooth gets "gets knocked" out:

  • Please call our office immediately.  You will need to be seen as soon as possible.
  • If you can find your child’s tooth, do not touch the root structure and pick up the tooth only by the crown.
  • Rinse the tooth gently with water to remove any debris.
  • Place the tooth back in the socket and have your child bite down on clean gauze. If this is not possible, place the tooth in a cup of saliva or milk or Hanks Balanced Salt Solution (if available).

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dentistry

Is it okay to wait a day before seeking emergency treatment?

Not all dental emergencies need to be seen right away, but it is best not to wait to call us. Delays can lead to complications or reduce the chances of saving a damaged tooth. Our team will help guide you on if you need to come in right away or if something can wait a day or two.

Are your emergency services available after hours?

Yes, we provide after-hours support for dental emergencies to ensure your child receives care when it’s needed most.
